Reagan, early in his public life a television salesman for radios and- toasters, brought congressmen into his office, made hone calls, di: hed aides to lobby and enlisted Vice-President George Bush in a hard and soft sell of the Nicaraguan rebels. ive Chalmers Wylie of Worthington, the most crucial foreign policy victory of his p' . After more than five years in the White House he d to p de a highly ical House of HANK YOU to childre iidren, CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY. in pt lied by Democrats, to turn the corner he wants in his Central American foreign policy. Finally, last week the House bowed to Reagan and voted $100 million U.S. in virtually unrestricted military and other aid to rebels fighting to overthrow the government in Nicaragua. How did Reagan do it? Two days before the big vote his long-time political antagonist, Democrat House Speaker Thomas O'Neill, rejected an unprecedented request from the White House for the president to appear before the House of Representatives to plead his case on Nicaragua. The next day, the three major U.S. television networks refused to grant him air time to give the speech he had wanted to deliver in person to the House. One cable network with a limited audience carried it live. Reagan's efforts to help the rebels were handicapped by allegations their leaders were engaged in drug trafficking and, from the safety of luxurious quarters in Miami, were skimming off aid money provided earlier Public opinion polls showed a hefty majority of U.S. voters opposed the new aid injection in this, a congressional election year. Many said they feared another Vietnam could be just around the corner. Talks with opponents of the aid who changed their minds and voted in favor showed many factors involved in their change of heart. But nearly every one the said charismatic, Ohio, in the centre of the mainstream United States, is a bedrock respected ican, a 20-year cong 1 veteran, a highly decorated Second World War infantryman wounded in Europe. And he was, until he succumbed to the Reagan touch, a doughty opponent of arming the rebels. The soft-spoken Wylie, in a recent interview, said he was about to deliver a speech to insurance executives at Amelia Island, Fla., far from the White House but not from the reach of Reagan, two days before the big vote. About noon, Wylie answered his hotel room phone and a White House telephone operator said the president was waiting on the line. ‘While virtually no one turns down a president's phone call, Wylie did. In effect, he replied, “Don't call me, Tll call you after talking to the insurance men.” When he returned the call, Reagan came immediate- ly to the phone. “He's very persuasive,” Wylie recalled, giving this account of Reagan at work: The congressman said he wanted Nicaragua's neighboring countries to get aid before he even thought of supporting the rebels. Reagan assured him he would support such assistance. Wylie e: deep concern about a flurry of allegations that earlier funds were misused. Reagan replied he would never permit aid to be siphoned off and pledged strict accounting. Wylie insisted on getting the pledge in writing. Reagan agreed. Yet Wylie still refused to pledge his vote. Dr. Art Blouin, co-director of the clinic, says 95 of the 100 the clinic has treated during the last 18 months went on crash diets before they developed the disorder. Bulimia is characterized by cycles of rapid and excessive over-eating followed by vomiting, abuse of laxatives or rigorous diet or exercise. It seems to be especially pre- valent among young women. Blouin said crash diets often involve a drastic reduc. tion in carbohydrates. Among other things, carbo- hydrates cause chemical changes in the brain that make people feel full after eating. Clinie researchers have explored the possibility that the causes of bulimia may be physical rather than psychol ogical or social. Blouin has found that two of every three patients suf fers from depression, but de- pression may be the result of bulimia rather than its cause. “When you treat the buli- mia, the depression seems to go away,” he says. Anti-depressant drugs have often been used to treat bulimia in the past. Blouin says the drugs are effective in some cases, but not as ef. fective as the appetite-sup- pressing drug fenfluramine. Initial research at the Civic showed that eight of the 12 people with bulimia who were treated with fenflura- mine were “significantly im- proved.” Coffee linked to cancer PITTSBURGH (AP) — Heavy coffee drinkers may face an increased risk of can. cer but they do not suffer a greater risk of heart attacks, separate studies in the United States have conclud Colorectal cancer, or can. cer affecting the intestinal area, occurs 2'/: times more often among people who drink more than two cups of coffee a day than among those who consume fewer than two cups, researchers found in one study The results were outlined to the Society for Epidemi. ologic Research by Cedric Garland, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Uni versity of California at San Diego. But other researchers also reported that they found no correlation between coffee drinking and heart disease in a nine-year study of 12,866 men around the U-S., tradicting earlier linking the two. An estimated 60.000 people are expected to die of con reports colorectal cancer in the United States this year, and 140,000 new cases of the dis ease are expected to be di agnosed, says to the Ameri can Cancer Society. Garland’s findings are based on a 10-year study of 703 people living in Rancho Bernando, Calif, a retire ment community that is part of San Diego. Of the 703, most of whom were in their 60s, 14 de veloped colorectal cancer, said Garland. Seven of the cases were fatal Three per cent of those drinking at least two cups of coffee a day eventually de. veloped the cancer, Garland said. The incidence rate was 1.4 per cent for those con suming less of the beverage or none at all. Smoking and other high risk factors were taken into consideration, Garland said “It's a big difference, but I'm cautious,” he said. “This is the highest relative risk that has ever been reported At this point, we don't have enough information to able to make a dietary rec- ommendation.” Previous studies have shown a link between coffee and colorectal cancer among people 65 and older but not for younger consumers, while other researchers have found no correlation at all or pos sibly even a preventive ef fect.
