The vice president is Mona Wright of Creston. The Kootenay District includes 11 units in the East and West Kootenay. Nine were represented at the meet- ing. There were no nominations for education chairman, the position vacated by Winn Weir. Weir has taken the office of public relations chairman. Rusty Wright of Creston was elected district campaign chair- man, replacing Doris Currie of Nelson who achieved record success in most Kootenay units. The emergency aid district chair. man is Vera Cecco of Kimberley and her vice-chairman is Lena Younk of Windegmere. The reach to recovery chairman is Donna Anderson of Nel son; and Dorothy Hinton of Cran brook is vice-president of the Can surmount program. These programs offer emotional support to cancer patients. Phyllis Hood, executive director of the B.C. and Yukon Division des- cribed new programs of the society. One is “Living With Cancer,” a support group project. Hood gave detailed statistics of the incidence of cancer in the Kootenays. Frances Rivers of Cranbrook, re- tiring district president, reported a successful Jubilee Year in 1988 celebrating 50 years since the Soci- ety was formed at the request of Canadian doctors. She said 12 volun- teers in the Kootenays received 25 year service pins and oné Invermere volunteer, Winn Weir received na- tional recognition. Doris Currie of Nelson, Kootenay district campaign chairman, reported that nine of 11 Kootenay units went over their campaign quota. They were: Castlegar, Cranbrook, Creston Elkford, Fernie, Golden, Kimberley, Windermere/Invermere and Nelson. Bill Sweeney, district co-ordinator from Kelowna, said the Kootenays should have justifiable pride in their accomplishments in all areas of the Society's work. Judy Collins of Inveremre, district nurse trainer for the breast self- examination program, reported that @ nurse training. program is under- way throughout the Kootenays. BSE training clinics for women will be held in all units as sufficient nurses are trained. Retiring district education chair- man Winn Weir said education for the prevention of cancer is a prime target of the Cancer Society but education volunteers are the hardest to recruit. She said excellent teach- ing materials are available and train- ing will be given. She gave a work- shop on public speaking. Erin, a young cancer patient from Cranbrook told of her experiences as a counsellor at Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp held at the coast for children with cancer. She said 66 children had attended this year, en- joying activities of healthy children with a resident camp doctor and nurses in attendance. The society said it was evident from the unit reports given that the need for more volunteers is basic in all units especially in the field of eduéation, “especially retired teach- ers.
