Harry Soloveoff puts the finishing touches on a scale replica of a Doukhobor village. Soloveoff and, ‘SUN STAFF PHOTO Trent Bancarz Model gains national exposure SUN STAFF A scale model of a Doukhobor village, created by a pair of local artisans, will be displayed throughout the country. Harry Soloveoff and Larry Ewashen have been working on the model the past few months and the project is nearing comple- tion. The model depicts a “typi- cal” Doukhobor village and all elements have been created per- fectly to scale, right down to the trees and wooden rails on the buildings.+ The model village will be moved from Castlegar to the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec on Dec. 9. It will go on display as part of the muse- um's exhibit on the Doukhobors. After the display in Hull, the model will tour across Canada to other museums such as the Glen- bow in Calgary and The Royal iW * or KOOTENAY 1 ARTISANS CHRISTMAS MARKET CIVIC CENTRE - NELSON NOV 30 +-DEC 1-2 &3 Juried Sale of Quality Handmade Arts & Crafts A project of the Kootenay Artisans Markeung Assoc In the tradition of the Hanbury Kootenay Christmas Faire * $2 Adults $1 Seniors & Kids $5 Families or Weekend Live Music All Weekend * Wednesday, November 29, 1995 The Ca stlegar Sun Page B5 ‘a Poet Continued from B4 other books of poetry culminating in the most recent The Astonish- ing Weight of the Dead (1994), In addition to being a poet with intense social concerns, Wayman has written numerous articles and published several books disc the necessity of including the details of work in our poems, Books like Jnside Job: The New Work Writing (1983) and A Coumry Not Con- sidered: Canada, Culture Work (1993) are examples. Also, Wayman has encouraged young and emerging writers— helping them find publishers and giving them support. As well, he has put together a number of anthologies such as Beaton Abbot's Got the Contract and A Government Job at Last. One I know well is a collection of work poems entitled Going for Coffee. The resulting film is also part of the exhibition. Castlegar Ewashen also was location Poet comes to Selkirk Tom Wayman blew into Selkirk College last week like a breath of fresh lake air off the Slocan. In fact, this image is not so far-fetched as Wayman has lived for the past few years at Winlaw, leaving now and then to teach around the country. And the students and faculty at Selkirk loved his reading. His most recent stint of teaching was a three-year contract with Okanagan College. But now he has taken a year off to clear the mark- ing cobwebs from his brain and to write a few new poems and a clutch of essays. This fall he has been doing a little teaching at the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson. Initially when I met this man, it was through his books. Being self-conscious about my own writing, I couldn’t believe someone would use his own name in the title of his book. But that’s what Wayman did in Waiting for Wayman: (1973). I thought, “What an egoist!” But I was wrong. Wayman is anything but an egoist. As a writer, he has written many poems with Wayman as a central figure, but nearly always those poems have been concerned with a feature of our way of living on this planet. He is per- haps the most socially-conscious of our poets rather than one who is tumed in upon himself. Wayman’s first book was followed quickly by three others: For and Against the Moon (1974), Money and Rain: Tom Wayman Live (1975) and Free Time (1977). Though these books occasionally show a lyrical Wayman, mostly he is grappling with the world of work, particularly as it shows itself in factories and cities. The veanes (Apple/EM!) Is it? Yup, it’s still 1995 so I’m not caught in one of those cool “time warp” episodes on Star Trek. Here is the reason we're going through the second wave of Beatlemania in as many years. Anthology Volume I is a gold mine, a treasure trove for fans. I’m as big a Beatles fan as anyone I know, with the exception of Rob. But with all the ghosts here, it feels like this borders on necrophilia. A bet- ter title would've been Archeology or The Lost World. No, wait a minute. That's the Jurassic Park sequel. As I write this, I'm waiting for Part 2 of the documentary tonight, working long hours at the radio station to get around the renovations and my deadline looms large as the words the late Danny Galivan might say. So take my words not so much as an in-depth review as a rather long-winded first impression. Historically, A Disc one has Johh and Paul's first ded "s living room with an old portable recorder. Then there's the 78 they cut (with George Harrison on guitar, John Lowe on piano and Colin Hanton on drums). Then The Beatles’ do “My Bonnie” with Tony Sheridan. I like the demo stuff that manager Brian Epstein shopped around for a record deal. These songs included “Besame Mucho” and “Love Me Do.” The ver- sion heard here was cut with Pete Best on drums, whereas ous awards. Both as a poet and an individual, he takes strong stands on issues. If his poetry can be criticized at all, it would be because the line between his prose and his poetry is so thin, Because he is an essayist of note, often his arguments seem to spill over into poems. Once in a while we are not.a “thus” or a “therefore” in a poem, and so we say, “Hey, Wayman, you crazy, why didn’t you keep that idea for your persuasive writing?” To which he'd probably reply, “In every poem I write, I'm trying to persuade someone to live better.” If you never read another poet- ($) ry book, you should pick up Way- man's recent The Astonishing Book of the Dead. \t retains Way- man's trademark humor and his lively response to love and eroti- cism, nature and death. It will take you in. A section called “The Winlaw Eulogies” is of particular note for locals as it deals with the death of mountaineering friends like Leo Bostock and others. Here is a lyrical Wayman we only guessed at in other books. The social and political are present in a few rants in this book, but the astonishing first poem “Woman Who Calls Hors- es” should have been a clue to the new Wayman. Perhaps looking back to his first book in 1973, it is this Wayman we have been waiting for. Others may want the live perfor- mances included. Still OTHERS may have grabbed this for the new song “Free As A Bird.” All valid considerations, but what makes this feel like a visit with The Fab Four are the interview soundbytes (hey, this IS the ‘90s) peppered throughout disc 1. We hear from John, Paul and Brian Epstein. The timing for the release of The Beatles Anthology Volume I is no accident and this new, yet entirely anticipated wave of Bc lemania -witHast through the Christmas gift ‘Season. Let me lay such cynical observations aside and freely admit that I’m up in this, too. I’m enjoying the documentary and this cd set and find myself getting back into the old Beatles albums. When I feel like brushing up on Beatles history, I'll return to this / well often. For sheer listening pleasure however, I°ll put the Blue or Red double sets into my cd player or any of the older albums from the slowly growing Beatles section of my cd library. Key tracks: I won't get sucked into this debate, so pick your own. How do you feel about the new song “Free As A Bird?” Where was producer George Martin? Why was Jeff Lynne given the honors. The result could be called The Electric Light Beatlestra or The Beatleburys. You KNOW when Lynne produces a record, he imposes his own sound on it. Up yours Jeff, so there. This dobule disc set has taken me back to the mid sixties when, as a seven or eight-year-old and the youngest of four, I had to be Ringo because all the badminton racquets were taken. So thanks to The Fab Four (and the record company too, what the hell) for going back to the “60s and taking us with you... thanks guys!! As with the “BBC” set from last year around this time, The Beatles Anthology will have you falling in love with The Beatles all over again.
