The outline of its roof and upper floors — greyish brown, white trim, corner sheep and flew kites with his children. His presence is still felt in the village of Beddeck (pop. 965) the incredibly scenic anchorage that Bell first encountered in 1885. Today, Beddeck is a major Canadian travel destination turrets, flag hi y, the b and end of the fresh paint — can be glimpsed through the sur- rounding woods from the roof atop the Alexander Graham Bell National His- toric Park in Beddeck, Nova Scotia. It was at this summer house — Beinn Bhreagh — that Bell (inventor of the telephone at 27) and his young associates charged through a lifetime of ideas, inventions and daring. They designed and flew the Silver Dart airplane in 1909, the first flight in the British Empire. They raced the world’s first hydrofoil — the HD-4 — to record speed of 70 miles per hour in 1919. Bell also experimented with aerodynamic designs, built an iron lung, created a surgi- cal probe, tried genetics with internationally acclaimed Cabot Trail, a popular sailing destination on the great inland sea and the keeper of the lega- cy of Alexander Graham Bell. Baddeck is one of 66 Nova Scotia towns and vil- lages taking part in 1994 in “Village Fair”, a province- wide celebration of small town hospitality and com- munity spirit. Baddeck knows all about hospitality. The village has more hotel rooms than it has residents and, in the summer months, the pretty resort bus- tles with activity. It has always been so. It’s quiet and peaceful demeanour caused the county sheriff in 1854 to use the jail as a boarding house and he regularly turned out prisoners to accommodate boarders. Resid the Bell Mi (which is open year-round) tourists can visit the govern- ment wharf where boats and yachts from around the world tie-up during their cruisings of the Bras d’Or Lake. Across from the wharf is Kidston Island, just two hun- dred yards away. A shuttle boat service operates between the village and the island where there is a super- vised swimming area on a sandy beach. Amoeba Sailing Tours of Baddeck offers a 90 minute tour of the Bras d’Or aboard its 40-passenger schooner Ameoba. Bannockburn Tours offers an eight-hour guided nature and history tour of the Cabot Trail and Cape Breton High- lands Park departing from Baddeck daily from mid- May to mid-October. The lake is prime nesting area for the bald eagle and there are some 200 nesting pairs Island, most of them cofi- centrated along the shore- line of the Bras d’Or. Baddeck has a variety of visitors services including a tourist information centre in the centre of town. Here one can find out about local attractions including nearby Usige Ban Falls Hiking Trail, about 16 kilometres north of town at Baddeck on Cape Breton _ Baddeck River. The Bell Museum sponsors a children’s festival in mid- June featuring kite making and kite flying. The Baddeck Handcraft Festival is held in mid-July. The annual Bad- deck Regatta, held every year since 1904, is held in mid-August and the Baddeck Handcraft Festival Exhibi- tion of Crafts is held in late September. Getting your vehicle ready for cold-weather driving will give you peace of mind in the winter months ahead. Thé nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), an organization that administers national certification tests to automotive technicians; offers the following tips to help you get your vehicle ready: Some: of the tips are easy; others require a pr ional auto techni 1. The Basics. Begin by reading the owner’s manual and becoming familiar with the various components and systems. Follow the ded service schedul 2. General Cleaning/Maintenance. Wash and wax your vehicle to help protect its finish. Inspect all lights and bulbs; Replace worn wiper blades; make sure you have plenty of washer fluid. Carry emergency gear — a shovel, a blanket, etc. 3. Battery. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with the professi il at a good repair shop. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re- -tighten connections. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. 4. Engine Oil. The oil and filter should be changed as specified in your owner’s manual — more often (every 3,000 miles), if you do lots of stop-and- go driving, carry heavy loads or drive long distances. 5. Cooling System. The cooling system should be flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition and concentration of the antifreeze should be checked periodically (wait for the engine to cool off!). The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps and hoses should be checked by a pro. 6. Engine Performance. Correct rough idling, hard starts, stalling or diminished power before harsh weather sets in. Describe any changes in your engine’s performance to a qualified technician. The air, fuel and rey filters should be replaced according to the fe ions. 7. Heater/Defroster. For comfort and vy, the heater and defroster should be in good working condition. 8. Tires. Tires should be rotated about every 5,000 miles. The air pressure should be checked once a month; let the tires “cool down” first. Examine tires for tread life, cuts and nicks, uneven wearing and cupping. Check the spare tire and the jack, too. Use caution before installing tire chains; they are not compatible with some of today’s “low profile” body styles and tire packages. 9. Brakes. Regular maintenance will extend the life of the brakes and prevent more costly repairs due to neglect. Brakes should be insp dasr ded by your 1, or sooner if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises or longer stopping distances. 10. Finding Good Auto Service. Ask friends and associates for secomimendations. Contact your local consumer or; ion Pp i plai etc. Look for orderly conditi modem i cl service awards and an attentive staff. Policies regarding Pricing and guarantees should be posted.
