S I SEE IT WITH HARRY PEPPER I had two rather interesting chats with two veterans in the fie ld of sports, locally, during the past week and I would like to pass on the information gained to the people interested. The first will be of some inte rest to ·an Rossland ball fans , both young and old . To the older ones, it will have some nostalgic value. And to the younger ones, lots of whom must have wondered, as I have done , how the Caps got their na me, it will be of more than ·s ing interest. nyway , here's the story as d to me by the West Koote:iy Baseball League President, ,crry Long, whom many reads of the " Miner" will reme mber for his " Sportlite" column . It seems that a gentleman by the name of Schwartzen arrived in town and for some reason had to stay overnight. After getting his lodgings for the night settled , he set out to see what the town had to offer in the way of excitement, and to hear Gerry tell it, he didn't find it lacking . He got into a poker game with some of the local sports and was shortly divested of his cash to the extent that he went out looking for some way t raise some more. Among his luggage he was carrying a complete set of Vancouver Capilano Baseball uniforms which he was willing to give as collateral for the sum of $60.00 which he was going to use to redeem his loss es in the poker game and then com e back and pick up his property . However , as anyone knows who has ever participated in the game, this is not always the easiest thing to do . Anyway after the smoke had cleared he had to leave town without his uniforms , and after a court case was held over the affair the Rossland ball club became the Rossland Capilanos and have r etained the name to this day . So the next time you see Gerry you might do well to call him " Mr . Capilano" instead of " Mr. Pres " as the for me r has more seniority. The s econd story concerns some info handed down to me by the newest recruit to the Caps, the former mastermind of some of Trail's better ball clubs, Lou DeRosa . Lou has certainly been able to fill a vital role for the Capilanos . Since coming to them , he has been a top utility man , filling in as pitcher, infielder and outfielder and has added his experience to the coaching needs of the club. The story concerns a tournament that Lou will be running in Trail on the weekend of Sept. IO , n and 12 . It • will be baseball of the double knock-out variety and will feature 4 teams , Trail Rossland as the hosts, the Nelson Indians, Spokane (Gonzaga) Bulldogs and the Kamloops Okonots who won the Okanagan League recently when they defeated Kelowna 4 games to O in the finals . First prize will be $500 .00 and second $250 .00 and the touand second $250.00 and the tourney will start Friday evening at 8:15 with Nelson going against Trail-Rossland Saturday evening at 6:00. It will be Kamloops vs Spokane and the losers of these two games will go against one another at 8:15 the same evening. Sunday there will be ~a mes at 12 noon, 2:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. if necessa- ....._ ry . All games will be of 7 innings duration . I would like to wish you all the luck in the world in this venture, Lou. Play-For-Fun playoffs got underway on Monday evening with league winner Hanso.ns ' Texaco clobbering the Irvin Hotel Mets 32- 23 while second place K.C. Knights shut out the Allan Hotel Roadrunners 7-0 . Play resumes nightly at both parks till a winner is d~clared . Then we can get down to business on our organizing job for the banquet later in the fall .
