I was doing some excitement of Christmas was in the air... all the usual accouterments were in evi- dence—gaily lighted trees, crowded shops, colorful decora- Hens: jolly Santas, Salvation Army bells. - Approaching me as I walk- ed ‘along was a young mother with her four- or five-year-old child. At that point she was Nterally dragging him along. The poor little tyke was ob- viously ‘done in’ as, no doubt, was the harrassed mother. I noticed her struggling with her packages and goading the young one along at the same time. |. The crisis came when she was only a few feet away from me. I heard the stinging words as she screamed at the child, “Shut up, or I'll smack you across the mouth." Seconds later she carried out her threat, Tcringed. My heart wept. Was Christmas meant tobe like that? I always thought that Christmas was happiness and THE CHURCH BELL News and Views REGIONAL ECUMENICAL PARISH from laughter and caring and loving. But I'll never forget the sight of a little lad ataggering to the pavement as a result of his mother's blow. The bankruptey of Christ- mas for so many lke that mother is demonstrated by an incident that happened in a little town in Florida, It was an unpretentious home for small, - fh unwanted boys, They had little of this /ii world’s goods, so the kindly matron made it up to them in the best way she knew how: she loved “them, mothered them, fed them, spanked them, taught them the love of God, read the Bible to them, said prayers with them; laughed, listened, sympathized, ex- horted, and then loved some || more. One day a well-to-do lady * from a distant city came to see about Carols at Raspberry Lodge * Accepting an invitation from Mrs, Tina Holoboff, matron of Raspberry Lodge, St. David's Anglican Church choir presented a program of Christ- mas carols and songs Thursday evening, to the ladies and gentlemen at the Lodge. Choir members attending were Mrs, Marion Booth, Mrs. Margaret Reith, Mrs. Bev. Hayashi, Mrs. Tannis Killough, Jim Waldie and Joe Killough with Mrs. Betty Hostetter ac- companying on the organ. Following the carol sing- ing, everyone sat down to a delightful lunch provided by Mrs. Holoboff and staff. ‘Thrift Shop News Volunteer workers at St. David's Thrift Shop will take a brief holiday during the Christ- mas vacation. The shop will be closed until Jan. 4. During the move ftom the old shop to the new, a number ofcartons of used clothing were packed and shipped to charita- ble institutions in Vancouver. We are grateful to Public Freightways for transporting these boxes free of charge. May we at this time ex- press our thanks to the people of Castlegar for their continued support of our efforts, and wish one and all’ a very merry Christmas, and a happy and prosperous new year. “Combined Carol Service ‘The'United and Anglican congregations of St. David's church held a combined Carol Service, last Sunday evening with members from both con- grégations reading the lessons interspersed with carols in which everyone joined. An impressive feature of the service was the candle- lighting ceremony, symbolic of Jesus, the Light of the World. ‘The first candles wre lighted from the candles ‘on the altar, and-these in turn lighted the other candles held by those in the congregation, again symbol- izing the spreading of the Light throughout the world. After the service a social hour was enjoyed in the Under- croft, with refreshments pro- vided and served by members of the Anglican and United Church Women's groups. a boy. Everyone was pleased and happy for the fortunate boy who was going to have such a fine home, such a successful man for a father, such a beautifully dressed lady for a mother. She smiled down ata small S boy and asked, "Do you have a bicycle?” “No, ma’am.” “Well,” she promised, “we will buy you one. Roller skates?” “An old pair,” he said, “We'll buy you a lovely new pair. Transistor radio?” The boy was puzzled, "I haven't got any radio at all.” “Well, never mind; we'll get you one.” . Still puzzled, the little lad studied her solemnly, then blurted out, “Please ma'am, if that's all you're going to give me, I'd rather stay here.” I wish for all the children of Castlegar this year a love-filled Christmas. Please, mums and dads, don’t cheat them out of that. Love is what Christmas is all about. Giviong is never a substitute for loving. I think our kids would rather have love without gifts than gifts without love. "God so LOVED that He_ | church | directory ST. RITA'S © CATHOLIC CHURCH ST. PETER LUTHERAN 405 Maple St. Rev.
