Help the Elderly CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, September 21, 1978 Adopt a Grandparent Help the Aged, an inter- national charity which has , recently opened its Canadian headquarters in Toronto, is launching its Adopt-a-Gran sponsorship program for Thanksgiving, to help elderly people around the world. The program enables in- dividuals or groups to‘adopt' an elderly man or woman in the poorer countries of the world by contributing $100 a year {$8.60 per month) to provide the “Gran” with shelter, food and medical care which they desperately need. The program helps to support hundreds of old people who, without help, would prob- ably die of starvation and would certainly live out the last few years of their lives in depriva- tion and without dignity. When a sponsor joins the program, they will receive a photograph and brief personal history of their “Gran” and they ean have the added joy of corresponding and exchanging photographs. Help the Aged was es- tablished in England in 1962 in response to World Refugee Year and it is the only charity which works internationally to - help old people. The charity has been operating in Canada since 1975 and has recently opened its headquarters in Toronto. Maybe you bought a local product on time and found billing problems had to be taken up with the company's head office in Timbuktu. Or perhaps you've been informed that parts of your five-year-old washer are no longer available, and you'll ‘have to -serap it and buy‘ vanother. Maybe it’s the quality of a certain product that bothers you, or the “don't care” attitude of the company that ‘sells it when you bring a complaint to their attention. Air Brakes School kids in South Aus- stralia are telling jokes about a ‘driver of an 18-wheeler who ‘ove the rig off the edge of a cliff to test the air brakes. Other than refusing to buy the product and complaining to the company, what can you do to bring about a change in the’ situation? Organize, that’s what. The more people who support your stand, the more clearly your voice will be heard by business and government. You can get the ball rolling by joining your local consumer group. If there isn't one in existence already, start one. Starting a consumer group isn't as difficult as it may sound. .One of the oldest consumer groups in action across Canada is the Consumers’ Association of Canada (CAC). They have chapters in most areas of B.C., and will assist new chapters to form in areas not presently served. Check your telephone di- rectory for the number of the local CAC chapter, or contact: 163 W. Hastings St., Vancouv- er, B.C. V6B 1H5.
