A ee equal we ae ws SSN), es Castlegar News October 11.1987 Pulpit & Pew By REV. CHARLES BALFOUR St. David's Anglican Church HITTING ON ALL FOUR CYCLINDERS Not so long ago I wrote an article for the High-Way en titled Proclamation and Demonstration. I wrote it to emphasize that evangelism has to do with “word and sacrament.” The shepherds found, be- lieved in and worshipped the Christ child because of the good news that the angel shared and because of the helpful sign that they had belong (see 1 Cor. 12:4-31). ‘The good news is also more than just “belonging.” Evan- gelistie work has fallen short if it does not help people to participate in the work of Jesus Christ. “As the Father sent me, so I send you,” said the risen Savior to His disciples. (John 20:21) To be sent out to serve Christ in the world is good news for us and for the world. To be good news, good witnesses, the heaven of the lump, and the salt of the earth we have to be doing good in the world around us. Think of the incredible wit- ness that the good Samar. ftans of this world have. Such compassion truly is a light that causes men, women, and children to acknowledge and praise the ultimate source of all goodness (Matthew 5:16). a BUSINESS DIRECTORY TELEPHONE 365-5210 Sr. st toner ur tion, incorporation and par- ticipation are all important to the ministry of evangelism. Besides proclamation and demonstration, evangelism also requires incorporation and participation. Successful and intentional evangelism requires “hitting on all four cyclinders!” People, as we know, be come one with the Lord Jesus Christ and with other Christians via the sacrament of Holy Baptism. One of the main goals of evangelistic work is to restore the lost, confused and hurting souls of this world to God so that there will be one flock and one shepherd. Whenever people become incorporated into the church via Holy Baptism great celebration should be happening on earth as it is in heaven (see Luke 15). This November, at our Anglican diocesan cele- brations at the regional fevel, we will look at the subject of “belonging.” Evangelism has to do with helping people know that they are important to God and His church. It has to do with helping them dis- cover and use their God given gifts for the wholeness and edification of the church community to which they do Fiddlers prepare history A meeting of the B.C.
