At the hospital. The Community Complex. The high school. And for those of you who venture out that way, even the pulp mill. Hughes and her husband awards needs for four years now from their store on Columbia Avenue. The Hughes’ entered the business when they took over the existing B° and W Engravings from then-owner Ken Hayashi in 1988. “I was looking to get into business,” Terry said, adding that their timing was perfect. “He wanted out of business, I wanted in.” have been serving the area’s © for busine: Karen and Terry Hughes have been servicing the area’s trophy needs for just over four years. Japan’s NYK Line, which operates in conjunction with Singapore-based Neptune Orient A long- time Safeway employee, Terry said the desire to be his own boss had always been with him. “I always dreamed of having a sports shop,” he said. But with Mallard’s and Castlegar Sports Centre already established in town, that dream wouldn’t be realized. Enter Hayashi. After reaching a deal, the Hughes’ took over B and W in March and turned into KATS, an acronym for Karen And Terry’s Store. Since then, Terry said things have worked out quite well. “We thought we’d give it a shot and see what happened,” he said. “We’ve been very pleased.” The Hughes’ set up shop at a time when the market was in a slump. But, in time, that market have branched out into custom printing and plastic signage, to name just two. News photo by Jonathan Green hu: nd wife recovered and KATS started to purr. “Within a year, the downswing was on its upswing,” Terry said. In the early days, the company picked up where Hayashi had left off, dealing primarily in trophies and engraving. When they took over the business, they inherited a manual engraver. Although the quality was good, Terry said it was too time consuming and that modernization was important. One of the first steps the husband and wife team took was the acquisition of a computerized engraver, something Terry said was necessary to keep KATS going. “Without this machine, we’d be dead in the water,” he said. “I —didn’t- want to fail didn’t have the equipment "y to st d In the early days, KATS lived up to its name through trophies and engraving. “I wanted to make sure we could do ins we said we could do,” Terry said. But before long, the Hughes’ realized that to survive, they had to diversify. use—I—of-silkser “Trophies is not the thing anymore,” he said. “You couldn’t do just trophies.” Through diversifying, Yrophies and engraving have now become secondary at KATS. The company now manufactures ribbons, buttons, pins and name tags, to name a few. But the item that has been the most successful for KATS is plastic signage. “That’s been our bread and butter,” Terry said. Through the engraver, Karen is able to turn a plastic called lamacoid into signs and name bars from the Complex to the high school. In addition to the lamacoid, KATS has also been successful at custom printing on items like shirts and hats. Unlike the traditional process ttern-onto an article of Sicthing, KATS uses a process called sublimation. By doing so, the pattern or picture is etched into the material, and cannot be washed or peeled off. wae goes ba into the material,” Terry said. Getting back to trophies, Terry said a lot of people believe that better prices can be found by ordering from Vancouver. This, he added, is not only untrue but it can be more - trouble than it’s worth. By ordering locally, people will pay less and avoid the hassle of returning faulty merchandise to a dealer 622 kilometres away. “We manufacture these trophies from square one,” he said. “Before (the customer) even leaves the store, they’ll know if they have everything they wanted.” : Although he doesn’t see KATS being listed in the next Fortune 500, Terry admits that the company has done well. For that, he thanks the people who have come to KATS from the day they took over from Hayashi to present day. “Most of our customers are very loyal,” he said. “People didn’t know me from Adam and still supported us.” And to thank them for that support, Terry says KATS makes an effort at personal service and boosting local sports. “If people are going to support me, I’m going to support them,” he said. “Anything for the customer.” @ Saturday, April 11, 1992 Answers to today’s Crossword Puzzle and Cryptoquip MiO[S ClH =] AIR RIA LIN mn a|m|O|>|D}-/O}O}7} i) Olrjr|> A R 1 -|>) Z/OjoOj}2! >| >| x|-/0|0| 4 xm Dee oO} La LE!) —|m|a/ mo!
