Reflex Action astlegar’s feet keeping Viviane Walker on her toes Jonathan Green NEWS REPORTER To someone in Viviane Walker’s line of work, feet and snowflakes fit into the same category. “It’s a challenge because there are no two pairs of feet that are alike,” she said. The Castlegar woman has been working for the last five years asa reflexologist, the last four from the basement of her Columbia Avenue home. Reflexology is the pressure massage of certain reflex nerve endings located in one or both feet that correspond to specific body organs or parts. When stimulated, the nerve endings increase circulation in these areas, reduce tension and aid the body’s own healing process. While massaging and handling feet that don’t belong to you may not seem all that enjoyable, Walker says she a "t min: heals the whole body. Through the massage, calcified impurities that have formed in the nerve endings in the feet are broken down, circulated through the body and later removed. Walker said that a fair number of clients who come in initially with foot problems soon discover the merits of reflexology. “A lot of people come here because they have problems with their feet,” she said. “If you have sore feet you can't do very much. “Your walking is limited, your thinking is limited.” Walker said that a lot of what a reflexologist does is mind over matter. She said that each section of the foot corresponds with a certain part of the body i.e. the top of the big toe with the brain. By starting with the big toe, Walker says the body is ready to respond. “Treatment is only one part of therapy,” she said. “The rest is done by you and your body.” But to give the body a chance to heal, Walker said sessions should be limited to no more than twice a week. “When I do the treatment, I give the body messages,” she said. “The body has to have a chance to do something with those messages.” ; In these days. of greater physical awareness, people are taking better care of their bodies, which you might think means a reflexologist has a lot of spare time. Not so, says Walker. “This is a form of prevention,” she said. “People are wanting to prevent.” A session with Walker lasts about an hour, at a cost of $15. Since reflexology isn’t recognized as a medical treatment, it isn’t covered by B.C. medicare or any other medical plans. Although clients end up having to foot the bill for each session, Walker says her client base is growing and she is thinking of expanding her practice. “I’m questioning whether to expand in the acupressure field,” she said. And though that expansion may not happen, Walker says she has been more than happy helping people put their best foot forward. “I decided to venture into reflexology and have enjoyed every minute of it.” (is ¢ LOSING ALTITUDE PWA Corp. of Calgary is headed for another unprofitable year — despite an unexpected cash infusion of as much as $200 million from American Airlines, PWA ‘chairman Rhys Eyton said Monday. Eyton said the size of the 1992 losses will be dictated by whether the Canadian economy re improves this year and whether international traffic picks up during the third quarter — the industry's key season. “You have to look beyond the feet and look at the people,” she said. “What I enjoy is the people connection.” Walker studied reflexotherapy at the Institute of Modern Reflexology in Winnipeg, completing the course in 1986. She put her certificate to work for a-year in the Manitoba capital before heading west to the Crossroads of the Kootenays. “My husband and I decided to come out here and see what the town had to offer us” she said. Coming here was nothing new to Walker, who first visited the Kootenays in 1982 to see her husband’s family. “I fell in the love with the area and said ‘We have to move here,” she said. And move here they did, giving Walker an opportunity to put her reflexology schooling to good use. Previously employed in hospitals and clinics, Walker said the whole idea of natural ing intrigued her. “] had always been interested in the mystery of it,” she said. “How does this work?” Introduced by bir sone over 4,500 years ago, exology is primarily a foot massage that For five years, Viviane Walker has Manitoban says although handling feet da’ ctl ACTION ADS — 365-7266 ‘V_ANNOUNCEMENTS 12 Card of Thanks 2ND CASTLEGAR Scouts would like to thank everyone who donated to our Bottle Drive on Saturday.
