Page 4B The depressing back The Castlegar Sun to school, summer's over, September blues School is back in, and getting into the spirit of things, I'm goug 10 write about something that all adolescents experience the September blues. For many of us adolescents September means the end of free dom, a special freedom that we have enjoyed all summer long Some of us kick ourselves for not doing the most that we could with Our free time, others for working all summer and being tied down Any individuals in these situa tions envy those who went away for the summer, and wish that they weren't so naive that they took their summer for granted. So, now that September has rolled around, we find ourselves in a common predicament—school Whether vou're going to col lege or high school this fall, or even if you've decided to take the year off to work, most of us know individuals who have left to attend college 0: university out of town. Many of us may have had to see our closest friends leave town to pursue bigger and better things, leaving the other in Castle gar. First of all, this is not going to be a complaint session, nor is it going to be for the sole purpose of whining” about personal items the September blues are real, and ° ee eee Highly qualified stylists to serve you Rask & Tri Prodacts Seniors Rates 314-10th AVe 365-2213 RETREAT soaring natural vaulted with daylight eme E. One comes to Carison’s Corner Dan Carlson several realizations. Many must leave friends afd family behind to advance in their academic careers. only to find an incredible string of obstacles to overcome First of all, there is the great cost Of post-secondary education With increasing tuition fees and room and board, as well as food and books, transportation, et costs are rising each year Fund ing for post secondary education is not in abundance, nor is it always easy to come by A lack of fund. personally can identity with, just recently I had to make a very dif Ss something I ficult decision with regard to attending college this fall with most of my frends. I had a few alternates: | could scrimp and save during the year (plus having 1 part-time job) and attend college with no money left over for enter tunment or clothes; work all year ind attend college part-time; or work full-time (or as close to it as possible, this is Castlegar!) and wait for a year before I go to Selkirk. As many others before me, | found myself deciding to work and forget about schoo! for this year, at least Then, of course there is finding 4 good, steady job, and as every adolescent in Castlegar knows that is next to impossible. Howev. er, that’s another story. Next, there's the transferability (or lack of therein) of university programs at various locations. Most universities have the ir ~ Own variations on the programs they offer, and if you don’t have your eyes open for these differ ences from day one, you could be out of luck. This is a very irritating problem ents find they must now face; many find them selves lacking in courses orawhat ever they need to accomplish their ultimate goal, and must settle for something else Many institutions are so diverse that they demand different Prerequisites than other institu Gions with similar programs. If an individual wants to go to one that several adole: institution rather than another (for various reasons), he or she may tind that upgrading is needed before they enter into their pro. gram of choice For most, the end of summer is not only the end of beac hes, sun shine (well, maybe next year), ‘n stuff like that, but it also means personal sacrifice and even great personal loss in some cases Those who must work fora year lose the opportunity to advance and improve themselves for a year or so, lose also the opportunity to experience collége or university life for the year: in effect, their life is on hold If they don’t have the opportu nity to improve on themselves, they miss a turn in the game of life. As illustrated, the September blues is very real to many individ uals, and due to the=length of this column, only a selected few of the sources may be covered. I would like to state here that any example I use from my own experience will only be used for the sole purpose of making public awareness on a common problem faced by adolescents, not to gen erate public sympathy for some thing I have experienced. In no way do I want to use this column unfairly to my advantage See ya! You can- not walk on the sand in bare feet, but must flee to the water to cool your burning soles. Such conditions also speed up the rate of evaporation so that, in autumn, Lake Glenmaggie often shrinks to a mere shadow of its former self. In very dry years, such as 1983. the lake has been Known to virtually disappear This is hard to imagine as viewed on a summer's day, Lake Glenmaggie covers quite large area, perhaps several kilometres in width and length. Lake Glen maggie was formed by damming a small stream, storing water dur ing winter rains, and then chan nelling irrigation water in summer to a vast network of farmlands stretching along the Latrobe valley in the foothills of the Strzlecki range The lake is well-used by the local residents for fishing, water skiing, para-sailing, boating, windsurfing and swimming There are boat ramps, picnic areas and playgrounds. Residents have built cottages along one edge. Crowds flock to the lake and yet, it never seems crowded Hot searing winds had spread grass and bush fires along a large part of East Gippslad in the autumn of 1983, now known as “Ash Wednesday” In search of respite, we drove out, with the windsurfer, to lake Obituary Raymond Bos On Sunday, August 29, 1993 Raymond Henry Bos of Nelson Passed away at the age of 26 years Raymond was born in Van couver to Gus and Peippe Bos, and moved to Nelson at an early age. (They REALLY don’t like that one) Made a sandwich and forgot . ‘© put anything on the inside? (at least there was butter!) Poured tea for friends and discovered di SS or better known as “what planet am I on” syndrome. This strange phenomenon occurs whenever our minds are clogged up with hundreds of lists of chores etc.. Some individuals are very good at achieving this “state” at will After all, there are advantages. You don't have to answer tu any- body (you have NO idea who you are, presently); you can blame it all on stress, (or-a bad ease of indigestion); you can “forget” to do everything on your list. (and if anybody complains, threaten to leave the laundry for them). So next time you find yourself tumns and other climates Glenmaggie thinking we would spend the day windsurfing To our dismay, there was rather more beach than we had expected. Lake Glenmaggie had shrunk to a few pools in the mid- dle, with dead trees, once well below the surface, now exposed. What had been the main beach, once well below the surface, was Seasons Elma Maund now exposed. What had been the main beach, near the boat- launching area, was now hundred of metre There was barely a soul on the beach With windsurfing out of the from the water question, we thought we would at least have a swim, so We drove along the sti slope and a parking place with king a steeper shade, closer to the actual water We found a likely spot and drove cautiously out among the rocks and stumps. Suddenly the car sank into the mud and we were stuck. Investigation indi cated we should go no further, so we decided to change and go for a swim before trying to free the car We changed hastily into our bathing suits, locking our clothes in the boot, and squelched through the ooze to the water. It was not pleasant. The water was almost hot, rather like the South China Sea There were a few fish and frogs swimming about, looking desperately for cooler water. We soon decided we had enough. When we go back to our bogged Ford, we discovered that the keys to the doors and ignition were locked in someone's trouser pocket in the boot. We had no tools with which to pry open a window, and we were reluctant to break one. We spotted another older model Ford parked not too far away, with a family gathered nearby, so we walked over to see if we could get some assistance. A friendly Australian, appraised of our plight, gathered up some tools and walked back with us to our car. When he saw it was a Ford, he reached in his pocked and tried his keys in the driver's door. No, that would be too easy. Then he tried them in the boot lock and, to our surprise, the boot opened! The Aus- tralian grinned. “Ford Australia only makes so many keys!” he said But you look pretty bogged! Here, I'll give you a push So, while I rocked the car back and forth, the men attempted to push it free out of the mud. The first spin of the rear tires completely covered them in thick, smelly mud! They looked like apparitions from the swamp! I was laugh- ing so hard I could barely drive the car. I climbed out and described what they had looked like They loeked at each other and started to laugh, and then we all howled as they described what each other looked like They suddenly stopped and looked at me, still clean and dry, and laughing heartily They moved towards me men- acingly, growling and threatening me with all sorts of dire conse- quences if I did not be quiet. I quickly got back behind the wheel and renewed my efforts to move the car first forward, then backward, silently thankful to be out of the muck and guck, while the wheels spun and mud sprayed up into the faces of the two strug- gling men. With a sudden squish, the car shot forward, and I was able to get it up onto some grass, where I Parked it. As I got our of the car, I could just see the two men disap- pearing into the lake. “You will be charged with polluting the lake!” I shouted at them, but they only waved happily as they washed off the offending mud UNDERGROUND SPRINKLER SPECIAL 10% DISCOUNT for the remainder of the season on all installations.
