The mem- bership is now 46, An effortis being made to secure a suitable building which can be used as a reading, billiard . and club room. The subject of most intereat just now to this organization is the ‘present early closing rule, as it js reported that some merchants are not keeping the agree- ment. The clerks claim that they sre now working 11 hours a day, and that it is wrong to.require more of them. One of the members said: ‘If those who do not have clerks, or can let then: - go’at,7 o'clock, keep open, it forces oth- ers who prefer the early closing to do the same. There are about 1000 mem- bers of organized Jabor in this camp and if they stand together, as they propose doing, the people who persist in break- ing the early closing agreement, will find they are making nothing by it. It may take 2 little time, but our com- plaint is just and will finally win. “Nelson has a bylaw which requires closing at 7 o’clock, and the Rossland city council may be asked to passa simi- Jar one if the desired object cannot be LOCAL BREVITIEs. But the proposition is being talked of and it is probable that in the near fu- ture theré will be a local band of aingers who will attract much attention in pub-[ lie. i As expressed by a miner who is some- thing of a singer, there are. many men in the city who are not only good work- men in ore, but possess voices of more than average quality. His idea is to organize a glee club, not for the purpose of making money for those interested, but for amusement, and to present the proceeds of any entertainment given to some worthy charity. .
