Rossland Light Opera Winning the Kootenay In- ternational Junior Hockoy League championship for both years of their existence in the league, the Castlegar Rebels imet their match on the week- end, dropping two games to the more experienced Quesnel Mil- Nonaires to bring the club's season to an abrupt halt. The Millionaires defeated Castlegar 6-8 Friday night with the help of some superior goaltending from Larry Brunt, who faced 49 Rebel shots. Saturday, Castlegar held a 3-0 lead early in the final frame, but Quesne)] came back with four markers to send the game into overtime. In the 10-minute extra period, the Millionaires scored twice in the firat three minutes and added an empty-net goal with 80 seconds to go te take a 7-5 victory. The Millionaires had the upper hand in the final frame, notching three unanswered goals for the’ victory. Rebels’ coach Mare Pezzin felt. that Brunt's goaltending was the major factor in deter- mining the winner. “He played exceptionally well,” he said, “and we lost our composure in the third period. We just couldn't put things together." Win Winofsky led Quesnel with two markers, while singles - went to Jerry Melnyk, Brian Fersterling and Brian Du- maine. Replying for Castlegar were Dave Kirby, Glen Soren- son and Steve Bozek. - Quesnel sat out nine min- ors and a major and Castlegar was given seven minors and a- major. Castlegar outshot the Millionaires 49-80. Saturday's match saw the Millionaires held scoreless until midway through the third scored their first goal of the game just after the second penalty expired and went on to add three more to send the game into overtime. Three Quesnel goals in the 10-minute period put the gamo and the series away for tho ~ club. The Millionaires will now meet the winners-at the coast to determine the B.C. cham- pion. The final series will be played in Quesnel and is scheduled to begin Friday. Gord Pace led the Rebels Saturday with a hat-trick, and singles went to-Bozek and Ed Smith. Roy Weppner notched a hat-trick for Quesnel, wilh Winosky, Doug Festerling, Brian Festerling and Lyle In- glis rounding out the scoring. Castlegar outshot the Mil- Honaires 47-85 and received 12 of 26 minor penalties handed out, Each club also had two majors and a misconduct. Pezzin was pleased with his club's’ performance during the series. “Both clubs played good hockey,” he said, “and we put up a good fight.” No Job Search Is Necessary, Recipients Told Mandatory job hunting has been dropped as a requirement for many unemployed, federal Officials say. The reason: There just isn't any work to be found. “We can't have people Tunning around looking for work that isn't: there,” says Larry St. Laurent, an execu- tive‘director of the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission. The job-search require- ment, rigidly applied in pre- © vious years, has been loosened ibecause of complaints from frustrated job-seekers and from with no jobs to offer, period. to Pezzin, the turning point in the game came at 8:21, when Rebel goal- tender Chris Vianich was given a minor penalty for delaying the game after he froze the puck, The call came when Castlegar was already one tan short: i+ 3 2298 The Rebels managed to kill both penalties, but Pezzin said the call “took the wind out the our sails." Some comments from Coach Pezzin about the season were: “The season was a tremen- dous success for’us. It would have been great to keep going, but we needed just a little more experience, “T feel that winning like we have gives us the experience for the future. For any expan sion team to win two champion- ships in a row is a tremendous credit to Castlogar Minor Hock- ey. if “We're developing a tradi- tion that our team wins on hard work and, as time goes along, this can give a team a psycholo- gical edge before the game even Starts. “I feel that the reason our team shows so much enthusi- asm is that it’s the end result of working hard and feeling that winning belongs to you.” The Rebels thank. their many loyal fans for their support. As captain Brian Veri- gin put it, "I really like the crowds, The fans give me more drive and desire to perform well.
