Unlike most west- ern badmen, he never robbed a bank or held up a stagecoach, Doc was a dentist by profession and a gambler by Inclination. John Henry Holliday first saw the light of day in Georgia in 1852, As a teen-ager he was intrigued with guns. By prac- cing every day he became a crack shot. His family sent him to Baltimore, where Holliday took a course in dentistry. At the age of 20, John Henry re- turned as a full fledged dentist, and opened a practice in Atlan- ta. The slim, blond, good-looking young man with the infectious smile and twinkling blue eyes appeared to have everything in the world to live for. One day a persistent nagging cough ne- cessitated a visit to a doctor. The routine visit turned out to climate might give him a few years, Holliday took the advice and moved to Dallas, Texas. As the cough grew worse, Doc's prac- tice suffered. Dentistry, crude as it was in those days, wasn’t enhanced by the dentist cough- ing in the patient's face. Soon Doe had to shut down his prac- tice. He looked around for some way to make a living, and de- cided to become a gambler. ~ Doc studied the various card - ames for months, until he felt e knew how to detect the- cheats and sleight of hand ar- tists who took their lives’ in their hands every time they sat ~ down at a table. Many a con- frontation was settled right then and there with revolvers roaring at close.range. Doc didn't have to brush up on shooting; he was already a lightning fast draw. Fast draw In 1875 Doc killed his first man over a card game. While charges were never brought against him for the shooting, he thought it would be in his best interest to leave Dallas. Doc moved on to Jacksboro, where he promptly killed two men in DOC HAD THE gunfights. Now constantly on the move, he touched down in Denver, Colorado, where he managed to put three addition- al notches on his gun. As a doomed man, Doc Holli- day always shot first and asked + questions later. His disregard for his own life was nurtured by the fact that he felt he didn’t have long to live anyway. Doe drifted into Fort Griffin, Texas, where he met a dance hall lady who answered to the descriptive moniker Big Nosed Kate. Kate fell hard for Doc Holliday, and while Doc didn't exactly reciprocate, he didn't discourage the big nosed one either, At this time Doc met lawman throughout Doc's life. Doe was at his regular table laying poker one night, when a local man, Ed Bailey, accused him of cheating. Bailey drew his gun. Doc leaped across the table, brandishing a razor LAST LAUGH tody. To protect him from a possible lynch mob, he was temporarily stashed away in a hotel, with a deputy guarding * him around the clock. Big Nosed Kate sensed that Bailey's friends would attempt to lynch ‘her man. She decided to take matters into her own During the the fire, They didn't stop running until they hit Dodge City, Kansas, ised den- Nosed and Doc didn’t get along. They fought like cat and dog. but Doc always was susceptible to a- reconciliation. He never forgot that Big Nosed most probably saved his life. Dodge City was a rough, was the end of the trail for ~ thirsty, sex-starved cowboys who had just been paid off. As a gambler Doc flourished in Dodge City, It was here that he again ran into Wyatt Earp, who was now deputy marshal of Dodge. >; On one occasion, a group of drunken Texas cowboys — shot up the main street of Dodge and cornered Earp in a saloon. Wyatt figured he was a goner. Just as the cowboys were about to kill him, the saloon doors swung open and, there behind them, stood Doc Holliday, with wn. As the |. Wyatt drew his guns. The two friends marched the cowboys down to the jail. Next day, with every- one sober, Earp issued the Texans their guns as they were ushered out of town. From that incident on Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were bosom buddies. When the dis- covery of silver brought pros- perity to Tombstone, Arizona, Wyatt Earp and his. brothers accepted various law enforce- Asa local gambler with a bad reputation, from time to time Holliday was accused of crimes he knew nothing about. Once, just outside Tombstone, some masked men. held up coach which was carr: bullion. The bandits didn’t get the gold, but managed to kill the stage driver and a passen- ger. Doe's enemies spread the rumor that he was the trigger happy gunman. When Big Nosed got dead drunk after one of her frequent spats with Doc, some of his adversaries vot her to sign an affidavit stating that Doc had taken part in the robbery and * had, in fact, killed the two men... Next day Holliday was arrested and charged with murder. His buddy, Wyatt Earp put up $5,- 000 in cash, a fortune in those days, to secure Doc's release . on bail. At the inquest which fol- lowed, Big Nosed admitted she had signed the affidavit, but swore she was so drunk she had no idea what she was signing.” together at the time of the rob- bery. Doc was released, and the one was returned to a Boe’ Holliday never forgave Kate for signing that affidavit. She had saved his life once, and + now was responsible for almost having him: hanged. Doc ‘fl- gured the slate: was clean. He gave her $1,000 and sent her packing. i : x At this time Wyatt Earp and his four brothers were deeply involved in politics. All of them made thelr living as law ‘en- forcement officers and, as a result, were active in local elections. ‘Like most. politi- clans, they had some enemies. Two sets of brothers, the Clan- and the McLowerys, thelr: spised the four Earp brothers and Doc Holliday, In Oct. 1881, the whole kit and caboodle found themselves in Tombstone at the same time. Eventually, Doc was arrested for the murder of a man, Frank ‘Stilwell. Ironi- Doc arrested for a confidence swindle, which effectively held up his extradition to Arizona. It was felt that Doc’s enemies would have him Killed before he ever got to trial. Later the gov- ernor of Colorado flatly refused to extradite Holliday, and he went free. Doc drifted to Deadwood in Dakota territory. By this time his reputation as a killer fol- lowed him wherever he went. Shortly after arriving in Dead-, wood, he added fuel to the fire by killing a bartender. He moved on and tried his luck in worsened, he was constantly coughing.
