No. 1 finished the season by winning
the C-side championship March 15-
17 in a tournantent in Oliver.

Castlegar’s last game of the tour-
mament was a hard-fought contest
against Surrey for the C-side cham-

Surrey scored first in the game but
from that point on, Wenger would

PR monsters out in NHL
as teams push for awards

Ed Belfour, Steve Larmer, Chris
Chelios and Mike Richter may not
know it, but their exploits this NHL
season have unleashed public
relations monsters in’ Chicago and
New York.

The Blackhawks have sent out a
143-page collection of newspaper
clippings, statistics, pictures and
other paraphenalia promoting
Belfour, Larmer, Chelios and Dirk
Graham for NHL awards.

The Rangers enlisted famed sports
cartoonist Dave Elston to do a cover
cartoon with the arm of persuading
sports writers that Richter should get
their vote as rookie of the year.

A pair of sad-sack officials are pic-

tured standing in front of a goal
judge’s position. Taped to the glass
is a sign that says ‘Back in 20
minutes."”

One official says to another:
“Gad, he gets cocky when Richter’s

follows are $7 pages of
newspaper clippings and testimonials
from general manager Neil Smith,
head coach Roger Neilson and three
assistants praising Richter’s fine
play.

This happens every year. Some
teams go overboard, such as the
Vancouver Canucks in 1988-89 when
they made a video and handed out
buttons trying to get Trevor Linden
selected rookie of the year.

Bo could be finished

Doctors say Jackson
may never play again

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) —
While much of the sports world
wondered about his future, Bo
Jackson went fishing.

“I asked him, ‘Can you fish with
your hip?’ "' ‘his agent Richard
Woods said Wednesday, ‘*He said, ‘1
can do anything with my hip.’ He
knows his priorities, and bass fishing
sometimes comes ahead of football
and baseball.

“He said, ‘If they will pay me a
little money, I will quit both of them
and so hunting and fishing all the
time.

While Jackson fished Thursday in
Florida, Woods said he disagreed
with published reports that the two-
sport star will not he able to return
to baseball or football due to his hip
problems.
