218 Saturday, December 14, 1991 @ New year starts | Afternoon of music brings with Christ In the beginning God creat- ed the heavens and the earth and it was good. Man and woman were giv- en dominion over the creation and it was very good. But all creation continues to groan since the fall of man. The ecologist reminds us it is time for a new beginning or it won't be long before all is be- yond reformation. Our econo- my is crying vut for anew be- ginning before it exhausts it- self and collapses into ruin. Our political system needs a revision of its communica- tions to the people in order to keep the country from separa- tion. Wherever we begin we must start with individual people and the problems of the human heart. Each new year is a time for introspection, self-examina- tion and a new resolve. The most obvious are those areas that need self-control and moderation, such as eating, drinking, smoking and exer- cise. All are worthy opponents to our freedom from habits. If you are anything like me, most of my resolutions start well but finish poorly. Often we lose our motivation from a lack of power in our convic- tions. We soon come to realize that we don’t have the power to overcome within ourselves. Shall we give up on resolu- tions altogether? Or shall we appeal to a higher power than ourselves? Paul writes, “For I am con- fident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 1:6). low Pulpit & Pew Calvary Baptist Church Pastor Bob MARSH It is wonderful to start the new year with new resolutions but don’t neglect to begin with a new beginning. Jesus promises the power of the Holy Spirit in salvation, to set you free from habitual sins. Start with a new beginning in Christ and resolve to reform your life in His power. He has the power to give a new heart and bring your desires to com- pletion. Man's efforts are commend- able but often fall short of per- fection. Eleven years ago my father received a heart valve replacement and we are thankful for the health he has received. But now the valve is wearing out and the heart is still old. The reforming of man is on- ly atemporary answer in com- parison to the eternal promis- es of God and new life in Christ. My prayer for you is that this will not only be the begin- ning ofa blessed New Year but the beginning of a blessed new life in Christ.
