Trail, - Stone, KNEW THEY COULD NOT WIN, The following is the perl prepared for Ae J. Brill and Theo lore densely wt their instance and request which would no doubt have been sent forward had they not bece pursuaded or intimidated. There is but little doubt but that it would havéwon, and that is what the local printer's union was afraid of. As stated previously Mr. Brill waq taken back into the union and given money to Wave Roseland and The Recorp office winoue pote. t night itis fair to presume that Mr. Rusch was induced tddo the same thing for he failed to show up for work this morning. N AprEAL to Wm. B. Prescort, lent of the Internati Typo- graphical union by A. J. Brill and the: lore Rusch, from the action of the Ross- land Lypographical union, No. 335. Beleiving that a gross injustice has been done us by. the Rossland Typo- graphical union, No. 835, and desirin; to sppeal therefrom to the president o} the International ‘Typographical union, we, A. J. Brill and Theodore Rusch un- der oath make the following answer and argument as our appeal: ‘hat we have been in the employ of Ebea C. Smith, proprietor of the Rors- land Recorv for more than seven months last passed and that during said time we have of our own free will and choice, boarded and lodged with!said pro prietor of The Recorp, and never been threatened with discharge should we quit boarding and lodging wito bim. That on the 25th day of September, 1997, the Rossland ‘Typographical Union No. 835, by resolution requested ue to leave the boarding and lodging furnished by the said Smith, and upon our refus- ing to do so, on the 18th. day of October 1897., the said union at a special meet- ing of the union, called without proper notice, expelled us from said union for said refugal and no other reason. ‘That on the 23rd day of October, and within the five days allowed by section, 4%, artical 8 of the constitution, we filed our notice of appeal with the proper offi cere of the subordinate union . That during the time we worked for the said Sinith, no_ employee has been compelled to board with him or has All samples assayed. RCSSLAND. This office and the citizens of this yicinity are constantly re- ceiving inquiries concerning this section of the country which are difficuit to answer by letter, so the Recorp gives the following information for the beneht of all: Rossland is situated in British Columbia, eight miles from the international boundary line be- tween Canada and the United States, Itis reached from the north via the Cauadian Pacific to Arrowhead, on the Columbia river, from there ty Trail by steamer, and from Trail to Ross- land by tke Columbia & Western railway. From the south via Spokane, Washington, by the Spokane Falls & Northern and Columbia & Red Mountain railways, Rossland has forty hotels, with bars, eating and lodging ruoms, and a dozen restaurants. There are three weekly news- papers and two dailies. All other branches of business are well represented. ‘The popula- tion is variously estimated from 6000 to 7500. Board and lodging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $2.50 to $7 per week. Itis useless to write and ask ifany particular business would pay here. Everybody must be his own judge and take his own chances, While there is not work tor all who iaquire, most sober, indus- trious persons who really wish to work have so far been able to obtain it. We would not advise any man to land here ‘‘broke” without friends, although many who have done go are doing well. This camp is now settling down on a business basis. ‘The populace is in en for go doing, That the said Smith has during our our employment paid the ecale fixed by the union. ‘W. H. Myers quit the employ of Eber C.Smith on his own accord, without proper notice and at the time of xuitting was in debt to him, and is now inter- ested in the publication of another pa- per. George Garwood quit working for Mr. Smith to go prosj.cting and returned and boarded with him five or six weeks without as much as even thanking him. Fred Wooley quit the employ of Mr Smith and was not discharged. M.D. O’Cunneli lost his situation on The Recor by his inability to hold it on account of intemperance. A.C. Campbell was discharged by W. A. Myers, while foreman of The Rec- ord office claiming he had the right to select his own force and his action was sustainep by tee union. .
