epepeerarte are Mens ott annals Em AS oe ca tL renee EVER Ene By Pastor Donald W. hed Inflation seems to be a fact ' of life. This was ra- ther vividly br- ought to my at- gs tention recently. You a recall ‘the New Testament parable about the servant who owed his king 10,000 talents and was freely forgiven. That servant then went to a fellow servant who owed him money and forcibly demanded pay- ment. It is interesting to note that in the King James Version of 1611, the amount owed by the second servant is 100 pence, about $17.60. By 1901, the American Standard Version refers to 100 shillings, about $25, The New English Bible in 1960 calls it a few pounds, about $45, Moffatt in his translation calls it 20 pounds, about $100. In the New Testament in the Language of Today, published in 1967, the amount is 100 denarii, the denarii represent- ing about one day's pay. That total is well in excess of $1,000! It has facetiously been said that the only place to find a New Johnny Cash Film To be Shown Saturda The story is old, but.the perspective is up-dated and brought into sharp focus by the film “The Gospel Road” to be shown this Saturday evening at the Kinnaird Hall. Sponsored by Calvary Bap-" tist Church, an offering will be received for the Billy Graham Foundation. “The Gospel Road”, di tributed by - World’ Wide "P; tures, was conceived and=pre— duced by Johnny Cash ‘and his wife, June Carter Cash, whose desire was to tell the story of Jesus Christ in a realistic and meaningful way. The film § isa unique bend Johnny Cash ally involved that you feel sympathetic pain when Robert Elfstrom, in an outstanding 1 of Christ, suffers the of abundant peat of specially written songs, and a series of in-depth character portrayals, with Israel itself as the mixing bowl. You are there, walking” beside the Jordon and the Sea of Galilee; you are there, seeing * Him in many human situations that establish a practical and personal rapport with every viewer. You are there, being introduced to the disciples, and gaining insights into their var- ied personalities, You are there, experienc- ing the highly charged emo- tional impact of the trail before Pilate, and becoming so person- physical attack that precedes the Crucifixion. Adding to the effective- ness of “The Gospel Road” in its * endeavor to convey reality for this day are: the fascinating treatment of the Crucifixion, making this tragedy an event of significance that reaches from its own time across the years to take on meaning for all men of all ages; and the songs and background music of Johnny Cash and other outstanding musicians, whose contempor- ary style is not out of keeping with the story ...a story that reveals that His darkest day has become our brightest. cure for inflation is ata political rally, a barbershop or a fresh- man dormitory. In fact, the Bible makes some sensible suggestions. For one thing, it asks, “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy?” Do we really need our luxury cars, our world tours, our gourmet delights? Our system seems to be built around buying things we don't _ need with money we don't { have. The ditty says it well, “It used to be in days gone by {which now sounds very funny), the foolish spending always stopped when one ran out of money.” Times have changed! Paul may have been on toa good thing when he remarked that he had learned to be content in whatever situation he found himself. Our definition of enough is ‘a little more than’ - we have.’ If only the James family would move away! Jésus once. said, “Gather up the fragments that are left ‘over that nothing be wasted.” North America has squandered more of the world's resources in ~ the past decade than all of the people. of all recorded history had used up to that time. Qur throw-away society will soon have nothing to throt away and nowhere to throw Aristotle Onassis once said, “All that really counts these days is money. It’s the people with money who are. the royalty now. “Time magazine remarked that by that maxim Onassis was king of kings. His holdings totalled $500 million. He had. everything but pos- sessed nothing. - In stark contrast, the only’ thing Jesus had when He died was a seamless robe. He had nothing, but possessed every- thing. Which way are we head- ing? Where is our heart? Are we straining to ldy up treasures onearth, where moths and rust corrupt, where thieves break through and steal... and ‘inflation devours? Or are we eager to be rich toward God?
