The money raised by Fox equals one year of the society's annual national cam- paign — and Ron Potter, volunteer’ campaign chair- man of the society's Ontario division, says some people might wonder why the soci- ety doesn’t forget about hav- ing a’ cancer fund-raising eampaign this year. Potter said the Fox money has been devoted to three special projects — at Terry's Fequeat — which would not have been otherwise under- taken in Canada, “Our regular research pro- grams continue to require funds as do public education and service to patients pro- grams which to date have not received any of the Terry Fox contributions,” Potter said. . “If we slacken our ¢fforts now and the 1982 drive (in April) falls short of its target, the net financial result of the Marathon of Hope will dim- inish, FUNDS SEPARATE The Terry Fox funds will be kept separate for special programs to finance uncon- ventional cancer research, to support training programs to attrack promising young doc- tors into the cancer research field, and to improve search centres at Canadian medical schools and univer- sity science faculties. Potter said about 61 per cent of the money raised in April will go directly to re- search, but not the research supported by Fox. About 14 per cent will help pay for education programs. About 16 per cent will pay for patient support programs. Fox, 22, of Port Coquitlam, B.C, lost part of his right leg to cancer in 1977. Last April, he set out on the Marathon of Hope from Newfoundland to run across the country usin; his one no good leg and an arti- ficial limb.
