Full results and game stories over the season wil be in Saturday editions of The News. league leaders Welychko peppered, but stones league-leading Nelson Maple Leafs in crowd-pleaser at the Community Complex News Staff The Castlegar Rebels have an artist in their midst who goes by the name of Vaughn Welychko. The Rebels goaltender painted the team’s first mas- terpiece in some time Satur- day night as the Rebels knocked off the Western Divi- sion leading Nelson Maple Leafs. Welychko made 48 saves, including 19 in the second pe- riod, as the Rebels beat the Maple Leafs 4-0 in in front ofa delighted crowd of about 200 at the Community Complex. The win snaps the Rebels two-ganie losing streak, but still leaves the them in the basement of the Kootenay In- ternational Junior Hockey League’s West Division with four points in six games. Welychko got all the help he needed from the Rebels of- fence which connected for two goals in the first and third pe- riods. The Rebels made the most of their chances in the first getting goals from Chris San- nutti and Bill Brewer despite getting just four shots on goal. Third period goals by Dave Dyball and Derek Lalonde iced it for the Rebels, who had 26 shots on goal. Vaughn Welychko Dyball and Sanutti both finished the night with two Points each while Aaron Hack- man, Chris Postnikoff and Cory Ross got one assist each. Welychko displayed the form that helped the Castle- gar midget team get to the provincial finals last season. Rebels coach Kevin Chevel- dave is still refusing to talk to The News on orders from team management. Rebels General Manager Don Joice issued the gag order prior to the start of the season in response to a column by The News’ Sports Editor Ed Mills. A meeting between Rebels’ management and The News’ staff and management two weeks ago failed to resolve the dispute. The Rebels host Grand Forks in a West Division clash at the Complex Friday night. Do or die on defence for Tom Kats @ Castlegar team looking for historic victory and place in championship in meeting with South Slocan Dam Inn- Mates in Trail Flag Football League. News Staff It’s do or die on defence for the Castlegar Tom Kats in their playoff semifinal Saturday in Trail Flag Football League. In what is perhaps the team’s biggest game in its three-year history, the Tom Kats will meet the South Slocan Dam Inn-Mates at Tedanac Field in Trail at 2 p.m.. The winner advances to the league championship game the next day at Haley Park against the winner of the other semefinal between the Trail Bulldogs and Trail Hawks. It’s a historic game for the Tom Kats for two reasons. First, they’ve never beaten the Inn Mates before and second, should they win, it would be their first appearance in the league championship. And just like they have all year, Castlegar will be counting on a league-leading, all-star defence to pave the way. “Our defence is our strong point for sure,” said Graham Menzies, whose 12, regular- season sacks put him second overall in that department in the league. “The games we've lost it’s more the defence that has let us down.” On offence quarterback Gord Sandrin has to hook up with No. one receiver Roger Junker and running back Dean MacKinnon for a decent amount of points, said Menzies: In their only meeting of the season a month ago in Trail, the Inn Mates scored a come-from- behind victory that is still stuck in the craw of the Tom Kats. Since then, Menzies said the Tom Kats have been waiting for another shot at the South Slocan squad. “We had a bad game against them that one day, but they're definitely beatable,” he said.
