IN MEMORY

George Markin

George Markin, formerly of Robson, died Nov. 29,
1991 at age 79.

Born in Benito, Man., he moved to Robson in 1937
where he lived with his wife, Dolly, who predeceased
him in 1985. For the past two-and-a-half years he lived
in North Vancouver with his daughter and son-in-law,
Vickie and Pat Hogan.

Mr. Markin is survived by three brothers and sisters-
in-law, Walter and Ann of Creston, John and Marge of
Langley and Nick and Anne of Maple Ridge; brother
Lawrence of Vancouver; sister Mary of Victoria; and
many nieces and nephews.

George was a gentle soul, loved and respected by all
who knew him, and will be sadly missed.

A memorial service was held at Boal Chapel, in North
Vancouver on Dec. 4. Burial was at Capilano View
Cemetery.

Patience is a practice of faith

How difficult it must have
been for those recently re-
leased hostages in the Middle
East to wait for their freedom.
To wait for years under condi-
tions that were worse than
wretched.

Not only do I join many in
giving thanks for the release
of these men, but I also feel a
sense of guilt for my frequent
lack of patience when con-
strained to wait. Even though
such waiting usually occurs in
reasonably comfortable cir-
cumstances.

Perhaps our problem is that
we are usually so preoccupied
with what the Greeks called
“chronos” time. That is, a brief
period measured in minutes or
seconds. The result is that we
have lost the significance of
“kairos” time involving
months or seasons.

Philips Brooks, the famous
New England preacher, was
pacing the floor in his study
one day. He was asked by a
friend what was troubling

So what else is new, we
might ask.

Many, many centuries
passed before God eventually
fulfilled His promise to send
the Messiah, the Promised
Savior. For God it was a mat-
ter of proper timing.

“But when the time had ful-
ly come, God sent forth his
Son, born of a woman, born
under the law, to redeem those
under the law, so that we
might receive adoption as

sons.” (Galatians 4:4-5):

Though we can now rejoice
in the fulfillment of God's re-
demptive plan for the world,
waiting remains so much a
part of our individual lives.
Perhaps we wait for the return
of a loved one who is far away.
Or, we may be waiting to re-
cover from some injury or from
some disease. The words of the
psalmist continue to be appro-
priate: “Be still before the
Lord, and wait patiently for
Him,” (Ps. 37:7).

Such waiting for the Lord
for us as Christians includes
the wait for His glorious visi-

ble return at the conclusion of

human history. A day that will
usher in complete deliverance
from all evil and begin an eter-
nity of total newness with
Him, This, for the believer in
Christ, will definitely be worth
the wait.

And while we wait, we can
be greatly comforted by this
promise expressed by the
psalmist: “Wait for the Lord;
take courage, and He will give
strength to your heart.”(Ps.

Merv Cameron doesn't claim to
have a perfect memory.

In fact, there’s a three-month
span in his life not so long ago that
he remembers absolutely nothing
about.

But there's one date he'll never
forget.

It’s like asking some people the
date Péarl Harbor was attacked,
or the date of Confederation.

“July 27, 1989,” he said.

That was the date a car acci-
dent changed Merv Cameron's
life. That was the date he became
a paraplegic.

Merv Cameron lost the use of
his legs that day, but he has
gained some things he never
would have otherwise.

And he isn’t the only one who
will tell you that.

The Canadian Paraplegic Asso-
ciation of Canada will also speak
on Cameron's behalf.

The Association said a lot about
Cameron in October when they
named him the Canadian Sports-
man of the Year — an award that
puts Cameron in the company of
Rick Hanson who also won it.

The award, said Cameron, is to
recognize what he’s accomplished
in terms of getting on with his life
since his accident. But it’s also an
incentive for others, especially the
recently disabled.

“| think their main message is,
if your hurt or not hurt, nothing’s
impossible. Being in a chair or not
being in a chair, if you want some-
thing bad enough you can do it. It’s
just a means of finding out a dif-
ferent way of doing things,” said
the 31-year-old Golden resident.

“The way I look at it, they’re
(the Association) trying to put out
a message, say, to somebody who
was hurt last year or whatever, to
get off your ass and do something.
Don't give up.”

What Cameron did to merit the
award is simply that he never
gave up.

When he returned to the world
after three months in a coma and
nine months in hospital, Cameron
continued to do the things loved
before July 27, 1989.

He continued to hunt and fish
and enjoy the outdoor life.

He maintained his relationship
with the woman he loves, his com-
mon law wife of 11 years.

He maintained his spirit, his
hope, his desire.

And then he did more. He
branched out. His disability be-

came an ability. It ed doors

for him and he rolled right
through.

To relieve cabin fever last win-
ter, he designed and built a gun
rack that has become popular
with local hunters, and which he
is currently looking to manufac-
ture in the U.S.

And he came to Castlegar to
learn a trade — he was a logger
before the accident — at Grifone
School of Taxidermy.

Six months from now he hopes
to open his own taxidermy busi-
ness back in Golden.

The first trophy he mounts in
that shop might well be the mule
deer he got this season.

matter of finding out a different way of doing things.”

can he hunt?

“In my chair. I get myself set up
in a blind, up and old logging road
or what have you, and it’s basical-
ly a waiting game.”

Waiting is something Cameron
knows a lot about now.

“I've got a lot more patience
now, that’s for sure. Well, when
you spend nine months in the hos-
Pital, it’s a long, slow process get-
ting out of there, so you learn pa-
tience.”

Cameron accepts dumb. ques-
tions. He accepts help from
overzealous people even when he
may not need it. He accepts who

is.

“I kinda accepted it right off the
bat. To me, it happened, it hap-
pened, you can walk across the
street and get run over by a car
any day. I accepted it, it was time
to get on with things. Life will go
on with or without you so...

He also looks at life a little dif-
ferently than before. He’s now a
stop and smell the roses kind of

guy.

“I just take life in a different,
easier kind of mode.”

Cameron’s no preacher, but his
optimism is infectious.

“Anything’s possible, if you
want to do something, do it. Being
disabled or not, if you want to do
something bad enough, it can be
done,” he said.

Regardless of the award, and
regardless of what some people
may think, Cameron doesn't look
at what he’s doing as any big deal

“Actually everybody's got a dis-
ability, it’s just a matter of getting
around it. Nobody's perfect.”
