These young Castlegar Aquanauts take a break during their training session for the Nelson Swim Meet, June 22/23. The Aquanauts placed second in the competition. Local residents say they smell a scam SHARLENE IMHOFF Sun Editor Making the was & young man, Some Castlegar residents who have been told they are the win- ners of free tickets to Hawaii smell a scam, and have been call- ing places such as City Hall to see if their suspicions are warranted. One local resident, who called The Castlegar Sun on Monday, says residents, especially those over 50, should be wary. The woman, who wished to remain unidentified in print, said she first received a phone call Fri- .day from “a very friendly lady who claimed she was i who asked if he could enter the private residence in order to demonstrate a particular vacuum cleaner, “He stated that before I could collect the prize, I had to test the vacuum cleaner, although I did Not have to buy it,” she said, As well, if I wanted another ticket to Hawaii, for my husband, I would have buy it myself. Incredibly, the woman still had no idea of even the company’s name or location base. “He was very evasive when I ioned him about anythii a government survey regarding energy use in private homes,” “She asked me all sorts of questions. Such as, do I own a microwave, or a stereo, a certain appliance and do I use them often, etc, etc,” said the woman. After conducting the lengthy Survey, the female caller stated that because of her piuticipation, the woman’s name would be placed in both a daily and a week- ly draw. Two days later, the woman was told she was the lucky winner of a “trip for one” to Hawaii. 8. When I asked him about his com- pany he started talking about the California Stock Exchange. It had absolutely nothing to do with my questions.” However, for the simple reason that the woman's husband was not home, the demonstration was put off. With her suspicion growing, the woman placed a call to City Hall just to sec if the company she described had a business licence. Officials there told her that no one was registered fitting that Rubes® By Leigh Rubin ty “I'm in the mood for a little treat, son. Creators Syndicate, inc. (©1991 Leigh Rubin! type of b description. However, she did find out that she was not the only resident to win a trip to Hawaii over the weekend, and that she was not the only resident who voiced con- cerns. Nona Kucher, a building clerk at City Hall, said that two calls had already been made by Mon- day, requesting information on 22 pages 7B 3B 8B 2 sections Ann Landers Business .... Every summer from June 15 untill Sept. 1, the Castlegar Air- port is home to these Ministry of Forests Water Tankers. The planes will be aiding in forest fire sup- Pression throughout the Nelson Forest District. “The pilots and aircraft are from ConAir, a private air compa- ny,” said Don Courson, Regional Air Coordinator for the Ministry of Forests Nelson Forest Region. “They are contracted to the Forestry in B.C. but can be sent elsewhere.” Already these Firecats have been sent away to the Yukon on .. their first assignment. “They ate: preséritly “stationed: in Whitehorse,” said Courson. “There are a number of fires that have been burning in that area. The Yukon requested the use of the tankers so the B.C. Ministry of Forests released them.” The normal term during which the tankers are stationed in Castle- gar to cover the Nelson Region is from June 15 untill Sept. 1. “This is the peak period for fire tisk,” said Courson. “Of course the term can be extended depend- ing on weather conditions. We had to extend it last year.” The Nelson Region has eight tanker groups at its disposal for the course of the summer, There are typically two crew members assigned to each tanker, the ConAir pilot and, “a Forest Service employee or ‘attack offi- cer’ who directs the air tanker’s attack on fires," he said, . The carrying capacity of the Firecat is approximately 3,300 litres, quite a bit, but-small when compared to the capacity of at DC-6 at 11,365 litres. The Firecats are used as initial attack on all larger or remote fires, as well as back-up when needed. “They will usually be used before a RapAttack or any other crew goes in,” said Courson, They are also employed during any remote fire where ground forces are delayed. There is usually an average of about 100 fires in the region per year, depending of course on the weather conditions, According to a Ministry of Forests spokesperson, the last really busy year was 1985 with approximately 240 fires>:- crests However, 1989 was quite busy as well, whereas 1990 was slow, with under 100 fires, Presently the fire hazard level is rated as being very low. So far the only fires dealt with this year were several during the spring, caused by careless grass buming. There are four initial attack crews assigned to the region, hired by the Ministry as district staff, two for the north and two for the south. Also protecting the region's forests, but under contract to the Ministry, are Unit , Helicopter- Attack , Fire Attack and Rappel Crews. Local residents and tourists alike are urged to keep on top of the latest degrees regarding fire hazzards. Castlegar echoed those aks “These people make out of deceiving, but i against the law.” Day says that people can trust too much and forget they doh't have to answer any questions over the phone or in person if they feel uncomfortable, or if they just don‘t want to—unless of course it’s legitimate, like the recent government Census forms. “If your suspicious in any way, don't answer the door. And don't tell them over the phone about your material wealth, That's just plain common sense,” he said. The local woman, who was told she won a trip, feels senior citizens are the “scammer's prime target, since she herself is over 50. “It’s not fair and it’s not right. 1 was not impressed with this out- fit, there was definitely some hanky-panky going on,” she said. The woman however, was able to give a description of the man who came to her door. She says the man was about 6'2" in height, had Jong blond hair (just past shoulder length) which he wore slicked back. She said the man had very crooked tecth, wore blue jeans, a T-shirt and canvass shoes. The man drove a small red car, which she ‘believes could be an Escort or Festiva.
