The Colun.vian of New West- minster, consicers that there is no cause for concern as to the life of the present government. Replying to this, the Nelson ‘Miner assumes that the Colunibian is inspired, and a-misrepresentation of its position, it can easily disavow it. But as it stands we take it to mean 1 | places on the list and the general: condition of these mines indicate a steady increase each week, that the li 2 nor will ig- nore the very patent evidence that the government has lost its majority and will not insist on an early ses- sion of the legislature in order that situation of grave political unrest. Ata recent meeting of railroad advertising agents in Chicago, says the Seattle Times, a vote was taken on the best medium of advertising. The ‘daily newspapers” were first on the list by a great margin and the monthly magazines second. The value of thistesti ial pap a summary period may be put to aj S. GLAZAN. Cor. The theatrical profession comes next to the railroad men, and actors often say that they live on the notices ex- tended by the press. Theatrical men have even called conventions if it has been duly das an organ, it should have some knowledge of the plans and views entertained by Ministers. Assum- ing that it is inspired, the Miner in- fers from the remark, that the gov- ernment will not expose itself to the assults of the enemy. The Miner says: ‘‘It is securely entrenched, and declines to come out into the open. There are six months yet to run before the legis- lature need meet, and during that period the government is beyond the reach of those who are waiting to rend it, All that is necessary is to abide quietly as it is, and the government is safe beyond perad- venture until the requirements of the constitution compel the assem- bling of the legislature. In saying, therefore, that the government is in no danger it donbtless means that it has retired into its hole and in- tends to remain there. “That would be all very well and very simple it the personal wishes or expectations’ of the ministers were alone to be considered. In this case, there is something else, and that is the fact, patent be- yond the possibility of misconcept- ion, that the government no longer enjoys the confidence of the legisla- ture. That is a condition which in- troduces other considerations. It is ble that b of a discredited government might de- sire to remain in office indefinitely. But something more than their wishes have to be regarded. A government that has lost the legislature is presumed to have also lost the confidence of the country, and in that case itis expected to take itself off or to be driven off. And it is the duty of the Lieuteant- Governor to see this done. Among the supporters of the Semlin Gov- . ernment in the Legislature there have been sufficient open defections to leave it in a minority. The mat- ter is not one for speculation; it has been patent by the declaration of members themselves. It is so pat- ent that the. lieutenant-governor cannot refuse to take action in re- spect to it, without virtually pro- claiming himself a partisan. We cannot but suppose that the full meaning of the situation is with- in the comprehension of The Colum- bian, and-we are, therefore, face to face with the rather startling sug- gestion that the ministers are coun- ting on the sympathy of the lieuten- ant-governor and will remain in of- fice until the last bell rings. The last bell in this case will be the ex- treme limit of the legislative excess. They are in no danger because the lieutenant-governor is with them. That is a fair inference to be drawn to ider the advisability ot dis- continuing the costly and or Satisfaction Guaranteed. -T: E. Adver- tisers in.general are quick to follow an ad ge, and this testi y on the part of the railroad men will not be wasted on them. This is in the highest degree improbable. The court of cassation will also have the right to order a retrial if it should decide the court martial has deviated from its instructions. This is the only loophole for Dreyfus, and his friends will fight this point tooth and nail. r Extraordinary measures have been taken to spirit Dreyfus away.
