Als Voice of the People: CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, December 15, 1977 On Natural Resources Editor, Castlegar News: Trecently attended a meet- ing at which Lyle Kristensen, NDP M_P. candidate for Koote- nay West, was guest speaker. Following Mr. Kristensens’ ad- dress, a question’ as to whether he therefore he supported the nationalization of Canada’s nat- ural resources. These resources belong to - all the people of Canada and we should: not let that “private sector”, concerned: only with tion of Canada’s natural re- sources was asked, ing profits and more often than not foreign-owned and controlled, dictate where Mr. “first as a politician and then as his heart directed.” His first response escapes me as it probably did for most of those present. His second response I thought deserves notice by all. In part, he said that he’saw a loss of jobs to other countries ‘such as Chile, South Africa and the U.S., as exemplified by the recent layoffs at Salmo’ and Inco, as a continuing threat if * we didn't ‘get’ control of that segment of our economy and‘ our will be refined and by way of this, what our “allowable rate of unemploy- ment” should be. * Lhope Mr. Kristensen ad- heres to this position through- out the campaign and doesn't yield to the temptations of party expediency refined and practiced most recently by Lewis Jr. (provincial NDP leader Stephen Lewis) in On. tario.
