Is there anything you can do in lieu 9! continuing.to lose ‘— ghortof ending’ the relationship? - While some people firm- ly believe in fully exercising their power in a conflict situation, many others solve problems with power simply out of habit and/or because they don't know any other way except giving in — and they don't like that alter- native. To persuade the other person to enter into a plan for resolving your conflict so that no one loses, you need to" take the initiative with an approach such as: “Td like to see if there's another way to solve this problem. What would you think of our sitting down together and trying to find a solution that we would both like?” SEA “I value our relationship so much that I'd really like to try some new ways of solving our problems. I'd like to tell you about them.” You need to make it clear how you feel about losing, how you feel about the other person — when he/she continually wins at your expense: “T feel so hurt and frustrated when you make decisions without including ‘me because often it means I don't get what I need. It makes me feel you don't care what I want.” “I feel myself getting really resentful because you change the subject when I tell you my ideas about the + budget. I'm afraid © some things that are important to me will be left out.” “ “T don't feel very loving toward you when we always do things your way. It makes me feel like trying to get torent back at yor . If you can express your * feelings in self-disclosing, non-threatening ways and shift gears to listen to any resistance, you may be sur- prised at the positive res- ponse you get from others. To show how the ETW Method can work, here is.an example from a family genu- inely committed to the “no lose” philosophy. Bonnie took the initi- ative by telling her husband, Jim, and her 11-year-old daughter, Sunny, her feel- ings about a ‘family conflict. She recalls: . “T started working full- time about a year ago. Before. that, I'd taken almost total responsibility for the house- | hold. A couple of months after I started working, I began to feel resentful to- ward Jim and Sunny. Not only was I working full-time, but I was also still doing most. of the housework. I guess I'd expected they would auto- matically start helping and when they didn't I must admit I said such things as: “Could you help me with some of this work? “Can't you see all the things that need to be done? “I'm just going to stop doing any work around here “How can you sit thére and watch television while I do ail the work? “Then they'd get up and do a few things.:— or we would argue — and the problem would come up again a day or so later. I decided this was'a very important issue for me — and I was unwilling to keep losing.” More on Page Cl " the other person has power and is using it.to get his/her own 7 : , : Regular Price Choose from Semi-floral coats, Sporty short jackets, Missy belted styles and half sizes.
