The society's nutrition
committee recently surveyed
23 hospital banks, which
collect milk from nursing
women and distribute it to
premature or low-birth-
weight babies whose mothers
are unable to nurse. and to
pre-schoolers who can't tol-
erate cow's milk.

Of the 19 banks that res-
ponded to the survey, 11 said
they did not screen potential
donors for infection, notably
hepatitis B, either through
blood tests or by taking their
history.
